Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashian have been enemies for over a decade, and the singer has seemingly reignited the feud with the ultimate diss track on her new album.
Swifties meticulously examined the lyrics on Taylor’s new album, The Tortured Poets Departement, which was released on Friday, for any hints of her animosity towards ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn, as well as former lover Matty Healy. However, they didn’t need to do any deep dives on who the song thanK you aIMee was about, as her name was already spelled out in capital in the title – KIM.
As Taylor and Kim’s feud is back on again, we take a look at the duo’s famous feud…
Kanye’s VMAs outburst

Kim and Taylor’s feud actually began as a result of Kanye’s infamous outburst at the 2009 Video Music Awards. Taylor had won the prize for Best Female Video, but Kanye wasn’t happy and famously stormed the stage to let the world know in an humiliating move that left Taylor visibly embarrassed.
He insisted Beyonce should have taken home the prize instead of the Grammy-winning singer. “Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you. Imma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time,” he said. Taylor was unable to finish her acceptance speech because of Kanye’s angry actions. Luckily, Beyonce kindly later invited her onstage to speak while she accepted the Video Of The Year prize.
Leaked phone call

Kanye made matters worse when he released his 2016 song Famous, as the track features the explicit lyrics: “I feel like me and Taylor Swift might still have sex. Why? I made that b***h famous.” Taylor wasn’t happy with the track, and hit out at the rapper, but Kanye claimed to have had an hour-long phone call with her about the lyrics and said she had given her blessing. The Shake It Off hitmaker hit back, with her representative saying: “Kanye did not call for approval, but to ask Taylor to release his single Famous on her Twitter account.
“She declined and cautioned him about releasing a song with such a strong misogynistic message. Taylor was never made aware of the actual lyric, ‘I made that b***h famous’.” Kim then waded into the row, and jumped to her then-husband’s defence as she shared a video of Kanye’s phone call with Taylor during which he asked permission to use the lyrics. “I know, it’s like a compliment, kind of. Yeah, I mean, what’s dope about the line is it’s very tongue in cheek either way. And I really appreciate you telling me about it, that’s really nice,” Taylor said.
Taylor fights back

After the phone call was leaked, Taylor insisted the call didn’t show what actually happened, and she released a powerful statement on social media setting the record straight. “That moment when Kanye West secretly records your phone call, then Kim posts it on the internet,” she wrote on social media.
“Where is the video of Kanye telling me he was going to call me ‘that b****’ in his song? It doesn’t exist because it never happened. You don’t get to control someone’s emotional response to being called ‘that b****’ in front of the entire world,” Taylor fumed. She said Kanye had promised to play her Famous but insisted he never did, leaving her confused over how she could approve a song she hadn’t ever heard.
“Being falsely painted as a liar when I was never given the full story or played any part of the song is character assassination. I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative, one that I have never asked to be a part of, since 2009,” Taylor fired in the now iconic statement.
Subtle dig at Kim

Taylor took a year away from the spotlight following Kim’s leaked phone call, but returned with her revenge track Look What You Made Me Do. In the video, she sat on a throne of snakes in an apparent reference to Kim, who once curelly accused her of being a “snake” amid the Kanye drama.
When Kanye’s track Famous was released, Kim tweeted: “Wait it’s legit National Snake Day?!?!?They have holidays for everybody, I mean everything these days!” followed by a string of snake emojis. Her fans then began leaving snake emojis on Taylor’s social media pages, but fuelled by rage, she then used the snake reference as inspiration, and even now features it in her Eras Tour.
Full phone call is released
Kanye West talking to Taylor in his studio
Taylor was vindicated in 2020 when the unedited version of her and Kanye’s call was leaked, and in the conversation, the rapper can be heard telling Taylor he is writing a song about her and asking if she could support it on social media. While he warned her there was a “very controversial line at the beginning”, he reassured her it wasn’t “mean”, and told her the lyric was: “To all my Southside n****s that know me best, I feel like Taylor Swift might owe me sex.”
Taylor laughed and agreed it wasn’t mean, but said she needed time to think about it, as she told Kanye: “When you hear something for the first time you need to think about it, because it is absolutely crazy.” During the phone call, there was no mention of the word “b***h*”, and after the call was released, Taylor pleaded with her fans to move on from the drama.
Kim brands Taylor a ‘liar’

The feud didn’t end there, as Kim issued a furious statement in which she branded Taylor a “liar”, and insisted the singer wasn’t telling the truth. “The lie was never about the word b***h, it was always where there was a call or not,” Kim fumed on Instagram. She denied editing the footage, and said the call had only been recorded as part of Kanye’s “musical journey”, adding: “The call between the two of them would have remained private or would have gone in the trash had she not lied and forced me to defend him.”
“At the time when they spoke the song had not been fully written yet, but as everyone can see in the video, she manipulated the truth of their actual conversation in her statement when her team said she ‘declined and cautioned him about releasing a song with such a strong misogynistic message’,” Kim stated.
Taylor reveals feud’s impact
Last year, Taylor was crowned TIME magazine’s Person of the Year and in the candid accompanying interview, she spoke about the impact Kim and Kanye’s behaviour had on her. The Cruel Summer hitmaker said the long-running feud took her “down psychologically”, and heartbreakingly added: “I moved to a foreign country. I didn’t leave a rental house for a year.”
She confessed she was worried the feud would mark the end of her career, and explained: “I was afraid to get on phone calls. I pushed away most people in my life because I didn’t trust anyone anymore. I went down really, really hard… I thought that moment of backlash was going to define me negatively for the rest of my life.”
Taylor reignites bitter war of words with Kim
She’s now reignited the feud with a new diss track
Pulling no punches on the track thanK you aIMee form her new album The Tortured Poets Department, Taylor seemingly takes aim at Kim, as her name is even spelled out in the track’s title. The lyrics detail Taylor’s experience with a cruel bully, who threatens to “push me down the stairs at school”, and pokes fun at her on a regular basis.
“And it wasn’t a fair fight, or a clean kill/ Each time that Aimee stomped across my gravе/ And then she wrote hеadlines/ In the local paper, laughing at each baby step I’d take,” Taylor sings. “I wrote a thousand songs that you find uncool/ I built a legacy which you can’t undo/ But when I count the scars, there’s a moment of truth/ That there wouldn’t be this, if there hadn’t been you.”
