An attorney for Shiloh, daughter of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, revealed insights into her decision to drop “Pitt” as her surname.

Brad Pitt's Daughter Shiloh Changing Name Due to 'Painful Events'

She filed for the name change on May 27, her 18th birthday. A legal notice in the Los Angeles Times publicly announced it shortly after. In a new statement, Shiloh’s attorney, Peter Levine, discussed her “significant decision” and explained the reasoning behind her approach.

“The media should be more careful in their reporting,” Levine advised, per People. Especially when covering a young adult who has made an independent and significant decision following painful events, and is merely following legal process.”

“Shiloh Jolie did not take out an ‘ad’ announcing any name change. Any press reporting that is inaccurate,” Levine added. “As Shiloh’s attorney, I am required to publish a legal notice because the law in California requires that of anyone who wants to change their name. That legal notice was published in the Los Angeles Times, as is required.”

While the name change is still pending approval, she reportedly intends to adopt “Shiloh Jolie” as her new moniker.

Shiloh Isn’t the First of Brad Pitt’s Children to Reportedly Drop His Name

However, Shiloh isn’t the only one of Brad Pitt’s children to drop his last name. Zahara has also removed “Pitt” from hers. During an introduction ceremony at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, after joining the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, she introduced herself as “Zahara Marley Jolie.”

Pitt and Jolie’s daughter, Vivienne, was credited as “Vivienne Jolie” in the Playbill for “The Outsiders” back in May. However, it remains unclear whether the 15-year-old has legally changed her name.

In 2021, reports revealed that Brad’s son Maddox, then 22, had informally removed Pitt from his last name. Angelina was reportedly opposed to his decision to legally change his name.

Shiloh, however, is poised to be the first of Angelina and Brad’s children to officially file court documents to legally change her last name.

Alongside Maddox, Zahara, Shiloh, and Vivienne, the former couple also has two sons: Pax, who is 20 years old, and Knox, who is 15.

Brad and Angelina started dating in 2005 after they collaborated in Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Their relationship lasted 12 years, including two years of marriage. Jolie filed for divorce in 2016, seeking sole custody of their children. They were declared legally single in 2019, though their divorce proceedings are still ongoing.
