Jake Paul has been cautioned that his upcoming bout with Mike Tyson might lead to an unprecedented downfall in his career.
Daniel Cormier, the renowned two-weight UFC champion and prominent combat sports analyst, has closely followed Paul’s rise in boxing. Despite Paul’s impressive journey, Cormier, along with many others, has expressed significant concerns about the upcoming match between the YouTuber-turned-boxer and the 58-year-old Tyson.
Scheduled for November 15, the fight will be the first boxing match to be broadcast live on Netflix. Many fans and critics believe that Tyson, an iconic former champion, should not be competing at his advanced age, fearing that he is being exploited for promotional purposes.
Cormier believes that Jake Paul is in a lose-lose situation with this fight. If Paul manages to knock out Tyson, it could be seen as him taking advantage of a much older, legendary fighter. Conversely, if he loses, it could spell the end of his boxing career.
During a discussion on the “Funky and the Champ” podcast with Ben Askren, a former opponent of Paul, Cormier elaborated on his views: “I watched Jake Paul fight Mike Perry. I saw him get pushed to a point where he was uncomfortable, and it looked like Mike Perry had a real chance. But Jake, being 28 years old, has a reserve tank that he can tap into. He came back and eventually finished Perry. Early on, Perry was getting beaten down, dropped, and outmatched.”
Cormier continued, “My concern is, what if this fight ends up looking like a 58-year-old man fighting a 28-year-old? Mike Tyson, at his age, may not have the stamina to compete with a young fighter like Jake. It’s a lose-lose for Jake Paul. Beating Tyson might not earn him respect, and if Tyson knocks him out, it would be an all-time backfire. Nothing like that has ever happened in the history of the sport.”
While many believe Tyson’s age will be a significant disadvantage, his protege Francis Ngannou feels otherwise. Ngannou, who trained under Tyson for his boxing debut against Tyson Fury, thinks the legendary heavyweight still has what it takes to defeat Paul.
“I think Tyson will still beat his a**,” Ngannou told Bloody Elbow at a recent PFL promotional event. “He’s definitely not the same as when he was younger, but when he moves around you and shows you something, you’re like, ‘What the hell is this?’ That’s something people don’t understand about Mike Tyson. He moves from your left to your right in the blink of an eye.”
Jake Paul has embraced the skepticism surrounding his fight against Tyson, viewing it as an opportunity to prove himself in the heavyweight division. Known for being a polarizing figure in combat sports, Paul has made a habit of taunting UFC stars and boxers.
“I love it,” Paul said in response to Ngannou’s prediction about the fight, which will be his fourth in 11 months. “It’s not going to be an easy fight. I think the first four rounds will be very tough for me. But if I can withstand Mike Tyson’s power, the hardest puncher on the planet, I believe I can take control in the later rounds and possibly stop him. However, Francis is right. I’m always wary of that one punch, and I have to stay alert the entire time.”
Jake Paul’s journey into the ring against one of boxing’s greatest legends will undoubtedly be a momentous event, and fans around the world will be eager to see if Paul can rise to the challenge or if Tyson will remind everyone why he is considered one of the best fighters of all time.
