A London Fashion Week designer has given a contemporary twist to Princess Diana‘s famous ‘revenge dress’.
Kris Cantu, the mind behind Knitwrth, introduced quirky sweaters featuring images of cultural icons in 2020, which rose to prominence after being worn by a number of celebrities, including Lizzo, Gigi Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski.
The brand has now added Princess Diana to its roster of muses with a £365 sweater, showcasing a striking print of the late royal in her off-shoulder black ‘revenge dress’ from a 1994 dinner at the Serpentine Gallery.
This design, which is part of the Not in London pop-up shop coinciding with London Fashion Week, is available to buy on the Highsnobiety app and at Selfridges, alongside other sweaters featuring David and Victoria Beckham and Sade.
Diana’s dress, designed by Christina Stambolian, is arguably one of her greatest sartorial legacies.

The late royal showcased the LBD as Prince Charles appeared on television confessing to infidelity after their marriage had ‘irretrievably broken down’ – and it was subsequently dubbed the ‘revenge dress’.
But Knitwrth’s target demographic – individuals in their 20s – wouldn’t have been born when Diana arrived at the Serpentine Gallery, Kensington Gardens, wearing the famous design.
Yet it is clear her legacy lives on as London Fashion Week designer Cantu has reimagined the cult look.
The advertising-exec-turned-designer, based in Wicker Park, Chicago, taught himself to sew on a Singer sewing machine.
Initially, Knitwrth was a two-man operation, with Cantu sewing each item and his brother overseeing imagery.
However, the brand shot to fame after being worn by the likes of Lizzo, Gigi Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski – and subsequently built a larger team.
Monthly drops are announced on the official Instagram account, which has garnered over 25,000 followers, and typically sell out within 24 hours.

The limited edition ‘Duchess’ sweater, costing £365, is one of three new designs created in collaboration with Highsnobiety and Selfridges, coinciding with London Fashion Week.
The £365 unisex ‘Duchess’ sweater has an oversized fit that is emblazoned with images of the late Princess Diana across the front and rear.
The further two jumpers feature a young David and Victoria Beckham and a black and white portrait of the singer Sade.
All three garments will be sold via the Highsnobiety app and in Selfridges on Oxford Street.
Previous sweaters by the coveted brand have featured images of Taylor Swift, Kate Moss, Eminem, Forrest Gump and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
David Fischer, founder of Highsnobiety, believes that Princess Diana continues to be an important cultural icon across all generations.
‘She was a royal, but was still seen as approachable and part of the people. She embodies the posh/punk aesthetic of our Not in London programming and remains an important cultural icon still today,’ Fischer told The Telegraph.
‘Highsnobiety’s audience is all about authenticity and people who inspire them, mostly by having paved their own ways in unique and unprecedented ways.’
