While Princess Diana and King Charles’ marriage may have ended in divorce back in 1996, prior to her death the late Princess of Wales had hoped that the world would know the truth about the love she shared with her former husband, claims a royal biographer. The royal couple were married for 15 years after formally tying the knot on July 29 1981, and during their romance, the King had sent a series of heartfelt love letters to his bride, which showed a previously unseen side to their relationship, that had been blighted by his subsequent affair with Camilla.

Royal biographer Ingrid Seward recently revealed the sentiment contained in the letters, as she told an Oldie magazine lunch, reported The Times: “Diana told me very shortly before she died that she wished people could see the love letters that she had from Charles She really wanted people to know that she loved Charles and he loved her. And I always remembered that. And she wanted the boys [ Prince William and Prince Harry ] to know that,” she continued. “There was a period of great love between them.”

According to Ms Seward, the comments were expressed by Princess Diana just weeks before she died in a Paris car accident in 1997. At the time of her death Diana had been in a relationship with Dodi Fayed, who also tragically died in the crash – but still wanted “the early days of her romance with the heir to the throne to be properly reflected.”

One mystery that still remains surrounding the letters however is when exactly they were written. The couple tied the knot in 1981 after meeting just 13 times in a whirlwind courtship, and later went on to have two children together, Prince William in 1982 and Prince Harry in 1984.

Just before the latter’s birth, the Princess reportedly told Andrew Morton, journalist and author of Diana: Her True Story, that she and the future King Charles “were very, very close to each other the six weeks before Harry was born, the closest we’ve ever, ever been and ever will be,” reports PEOPLE.

Former British Army captain James Hewitt also claimed to have embarked on a five year affair with the Princess around 1986, however for his part, King Charles insisted he had always been faithful to his wife, “Until it became irretrievably broken down, us both having tried,” The New York Times reported.

Things had seemingly soured by the time Diana went on to give her now historic interview on BBC ’s Panorama in 1995, just one year before her divorce, when she gave a far less romantic view of her marriage to Martin Bashir.

“There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded,” she coolly shared in a clear reference to her husband’s affair with future Queen Camilla.
