Terence Crawford, the former undisputed world boxing champion, has recently admitted that he is intrigued by Conor McGregor’s lucrative two-fight deal proposal, which would feature both boxing and MMA bouts. This revelation comes after McGregor disclosed a staggering $200 million offer to Crawford, sparking discussions about a potential crossover fight.
Crawford’s response to this enticing offer was simple: “Tempted.”
Conor McGregor has made headlines in the past for his crossover into boxing, most notably when he faced Floyd Mayweather in 2017. That fight, which generated immense revenue, showcased McGregor’s ability to draw attention and dollars from both sports. Now, he sees potential in a matchup with Crawford, who is recognized as one of the greatest boxers of his era.
During a recent livestream on Duelbits, McGregor praised Crawford, stating, “Crawford is very slick; he also has a wrestling background pedigree.” He further explained their discussions, saying, “We were talking back and forth about a two-fight deal.”
Crawford remains a dominant force in boxing, recently defeating Israil Madrimov to claim the WBA super-welterweight world title. His partnership with Saudi boxing promoter Turki Alalshikh’s Riyadh Season marks a significant development in his career, especially with the collaboration between Riyadh Season and the UFC.
On the other hand, McGregor has been out of action since July 2021 due to a leg injury, and his return to the octagon remains uncertain after his bout against Michael Chandler fell through due to a toe injury.
In their discussions, Crawford expressed his reservations about competing in MMA. He humorously recounted, “I told Conor, ‘Hell no.’ They called me and they offered me the fight… I said, ‘Man, I ain’t getting into no octagon with you so you can be kicking me and elbowing me.’”
While McGregor acknowledged the risks, he emphasized the financial potential of such a match: “We will make a s*** ton of money.” However, Crawford maintained that, despite the allure of the paycheck, he values his safety and comfort in the boxing ring over financial gain.
As Crawford contemplates his next move, he is also eyeing a super-fight against Mexican boxing icon Canelo Alvarez, despite speculation about retirement. The potential for a high-stakes showdown with McGregor remains an intriguing topic in the world of combat sports, though Crawford’s commitment to boxing and his reluctance to face the unpredictable nature of MMA present significant hurdles.
In the world of combat sports, where money and legacy often collide, Terence Crawford’s thoughtful approach serves as a reminder that, for many athletes, the fight is about more than just financial gain—it’s about respect for their craft and the sport they have dedicated their lives to. As discussions between these two superstars continue, fans eagerly await what could be one of the most talked-about events in sports history.
