Lip reader deciphers Nicole Kidman and Jodie Foster’s tense Golden Globes conversation

Nicole Kidman and Jodie Foster‘s intense conversation at Sunday’s Golden Globe awards sparked a wave of online speculation.

And now a forensic lip reader has revealed what the superstar pair were really saying in an exclusive chat with DailyMail.com.

Foster’s deep chat with Kidman took place after the former had won Best Actress in a Miniseries or Motion Picture—Television for True Detective: Night Country – and was heckled by fellow nominee Sofia Vergara during her acceptance speech.

Jeremy Freeman revealed Kidman said in response to Foster discussing her win: ‘Yeah, yeah…it’s a f*****g tough award. And it’s OK. So…it’s so good. I’m so glad you got that, I’m so glad. It’s good. Don’t spoil it. You did. Right!’

An emotional Foster then acknowledged Kidman during the cryptic exchange.

Vergara, 52, who portrayed the infamous ‘Cocaine Godmother’ Griselda Blanco in the series Griselda, had heckled the Hollywood icon as she got up onstage.

As the announcer told the crowd that it was Foster’s ’10th nomination and fifth win’ Vergara was pictured rising up from her seat and approaching the stage as she exclaimed, ‘Oh no, give me one!’

‘I know, I know,’ Jodie replied while chuckling, as she acknowledged Vergara’s good-natured jest.

The camera then cut to Sofia’s face, who looked momentarily serious before breaking into a laugh.

Jodie also acknowledged Sofia in her speech, telling the crowd: ‘The greatest thing about being this age and being in this time is having a community of all these people, especially you, Sofia.’

She went on to thank ‘Our True Detective team who I love so much, we are only here for one reason, and that is the wonderful, beautiful showrunner, writer, director. So grateful to you and your talent and your friendship.’

She also thanked ‘the indigenous people who share their stories with us. They’ve changed my life, hopefully they will change yours.’

Jodie also thanked her family, including her sons Kit, 23 — who accompanied her to the event — and Charles, 26, whom she shares with ex Cydney Bernard, 71, and her spouse, Alexandra Hedison, 55.

‘Kit, my scientist son, and Charlie, my actor son who is starting his career, hopefully you understand the joy, such joy that comes from doing really hard, meaningful, good work.’

2025 Golden Globes: The big winners and the best speeches

‘So, my boys, I love you, and this of course is for you, and the love of my life, Alex. Thank you forever.’

After Jodie finished her speech the camera once again cut to Sofia, as she pretended to be frustrated before laughing.

Foster previously won a Golden Globe for best actress for The Accused (1989), The Silence of the Lambs (1992) and best supporting actress in The Mauritanian (2021). She was also honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2013.

The chat between Kidman and Foster  puzzled fans on social media after the New York Times‘ awards season columnist Kyle Buchanan shared video of the strange interaction on X (formerly Twitter).

‘Nicole Kidman is *locking in* to this intense conversation with Jodie Foster during the Golden Globes commercial break,’ he captioned the clip, which appeared to have been shot from a video screen located inside the Beverly Hilton hotel, where comedian Nikki Glaser hosted the film and television awards show.

Kidman was also nominated in the best actress in a drama category for her lead role in the buzzy erotic film Babygirl, though she lost out to a surprise winner, the Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres who starred in I’m Still Here.

One fan theorized Kidman was consoling Foster about Vergara’s heckling, writing: ‘It looked like Nicole was saying I’m sorry she did that. About Sofia?’

Another wrote: ‘So incredibly kind of Nicole Kidman. It seems as though she’s telling Jodie she really deserved the award she received and that she’s sorry Sofia Vergara was so rude during her speech.’
