Meghan Markle seems to have very little in common with her sister-in-law, Princess Kate. And the marked differences between the two royals was clear right from the outset, according to one expert

It’s no secret that Meghan Markle failed to bond with her in-laws – including Princess Kate. And there was a telling sign that illustrated just how different the pair were, right from the very outset.

Experts have pointed to Kate and Meghan’s very different demeanours in their engagement interviews, noting that Meghan cut a far more confident figure than other women who have married into the Royal Family. Princess Diana was incredibly shy when she appeared next to then-Prince Charles following their engagement announcement in 1981. Similarly, Princess Kate seemed nervous when she and William spoke to ITV’s Tom Bradby in November 2010, looking to her future husband to take the lead when presented with questions.

Not so Meghan. In contrast, she seemed more confident than Prince Harry during their engagement interview with Mishal Husain in 2017, writes the Daily Mail’s Richard Eden, adding: “She was, after all, an experienced actress. “Her body language, which saw her lean across her fiancé at times, made her seem the dominant half of the partnership.”

The royal expert also revealed that sources who worked for the Royal Household at the time of Mishal’s interview in 2017 said the duchess’s ‘performance’ should have raised more concerns than it did. “At the time, there was so much excitement about the engagement that no one really questioned some of Meghan’s comments,” one insider is quoted as saying. “But, if you watch it again now, some of her responses seem insincere and her body language is telling.”

Certainly, in hindsight, the interview has raised eyebrows. Meghan told Mishal that she had met Harry on a ‘blind date’ with Harry adding: ‘It was a blind date, for sure.’ However, in their 2022 Netflix series, the Duke says he got to know his future wife via a photo-sharing app, explaining: “Meghan and I met over Instagram,” he explained. “I was scrolling through my feed and someone who was a friend had this video of the two of them, it was like a Snapchat,” he said. “That was the first thing. I was like ‘Who is THAT?'”

Meghan then said the friend had sent her an email, saying: “Between you and I thought you might want to know this being newly single and all. I put our Snapchat on Instagram and Prince Haz follows me (he’s a friend) he called me last night dying to meet you. hehehe. I might just have to set you up (sic).”

The couple said they then exchanged flirty messages and had video calls before finally arranging to meet up in real life. But the new details left many royal fans scratching their heads. On Twitter , one person wrote: “I’m confused af. I thought Harry and Meghan met on a blind date? Now they met and started chatting after he saw a picture on Instagram? Which is it?”

Another wrote: “Was it on a blind date like they’ve said in older interviews? Or on Instagram like they now say in the doc? I’m surprised that nobody on their team edited that part before it was released.” “They said it was a blind date at first and now it’s via Instagram?” asked a third.

It’s not the only confusion surrounding the couple’s initial meeting. Harry wrote about the date in his tell-all memoir Spare , describing Meghan as wearing a black sweatshirt, jeans and heels. And while he notes that he knows nothing about fashion, he said he could tell she was “chic”, admiring her “no frills” look and describing her as “heart-attack beautiful”.

But his comments are at odds with Meghan’s own account. When she was reunited with her Givenchy wedding dress for an ITV documentary, Meghan revealed she had a patch from the dress sewn into her gown as her ‘something blue’. Seeing the dress for the first time since her wedding during ITV ’s Queen and Commonwealth, she said: “My goodness, it’s amazing, isn’t it? Somewhere in here, there’s a piece of… did you see it? The piece of blue fabric that’s stitched inside. It was my something blue . It’s fabric from the dress that I wore on our first date. It’s nice to see it again. It’s beautiful.”
