Tyson Fury’s next fight has been confirmed after he lost his heavyweight title unification bout against Oleksandr Usyk on Sunday.
‘The Gypsy King’ suffered a split decision defeat against the Ukrainian in Riyadh – his first loss in professional boxing.
Fury controlled the early stages of the fight, but Usyk managed to score a knockdown in round nine that changed the course of the bout completely.
Although Fury managed to get through to round 10 and recover, the judges awarded the fight to his opponent with scores of 115-112 to Usyk, 114-113 to Usyk and 114-113 to Fury.
The Morecambe-based boxer announced in the fight’s immediate aftermath that he wanted to activate his rematch clause to take on Usyk in October.
There had been no confirmation of such a clause being triggered by Tuesday – but his promoter Frank Warren has now announced that Fury will indeed take a rematch against Usyk later this year.
Warren says that plans are underway for the second fight to take place in October in Saudi Arabia, although a specific date has yet to be confirmed.
Speaking after his defeat on Sunday, Fury stated his belief that he won ‘the majority’ of the rounds.
He said: “I believe I won that fight. I believe he won a few of the rounds, but I won the majority of them. And I believe it was – what can you do? – one of them decisions in boxing.
“We both put on a good fight. Best we could do. And, you know, his country’s at war. So people are siding with a country at war.
“But make no mistake, I’ve won that fight in my opinion, and I’ll be back. We’ve got a rematch clause.”
The rematch is set to be for the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO titles, with Usyk becoming undisputed champion as a result of his victory on Sunday.
