Tyson Fury has been brutally told he would be “knocked out cold” in an ultimate heavyweight fight against Mike Tyson. The boxing icon, after whom Fury was named, is still the youngest person to win a heavyweight world title at just 20.
Asked about a potential fight between the two Tysons, ex-world champion Carl Froch said he thinks ‘Iron Mike’ would have knocked Fury flat on his back. Froch has been embroiled in a war of wards with Fury’s dad John, who even dared the former super-middleweight to a fight, promising they could fill Wembley Stadium. Outspoken John Fury even put out a challenge to Mike Tyson.
Froch told Lucky Block: “Mike Tyson knocked out a few big lumps and tall guys too. I reckon Tyson Fury could keep him at bay for a bit, but we’re talking about a prime Mike Tyson, who was world champ at 20. I think a prime Mike Tyson beats almost anybody. Just the way he used to be in the ring, he was a dangerous, dangerous man. He never stopped throwing punches. He used to roll his way into range.
“If they tried to grab him, he’d push them off and throw big hooks and uppercuts, landing on the chin and knocking them out cold. For me, the answer to that question would be Mike Tyson beats Tyson Fury.”
Fury was supposed to fight Oleksandr Usyk in a heavyweight world title unification fight last weekend, but now they will face each other on May 18 after Fury suffered a cut above his eye while training. Fury will be hoping for a better showing in the fight with Usyk than in his last one with ex-UFC champ Francis Ngannou.
Tyson helped Ngannou get ready for his professional boxing debut fight against Fury and didn’t take 59-year-old John’s offer to fight seriously. At the press conference before the fight, Tyson said: “He’s out of mind about the exhibition. I’ll tell you what has impressed me so much at the weigh-in and press conference, normally they have to be tough but it was all love in there. It was a majestic sign of ‘We’re fighting each other’. Just amazing. I’ve never experienced anything like that.”
