Lewis Hamilton’s emotions peaked after winning the 2024 F1 British Grand Prix, as he shared a passionate message with engineer Peter Bonnington at the end of the race. This marked his first win since Saudi Arabia in 2021 and the team’s second win this season.

Starting the race in P2, Hamilton’s competitive and consistent drive saw him win his record-extending 104th Formula 1 Grand Prix. This win had been long overdue, as Mercedes lost their dominant spell in the 2022 season.

The British driver has now set a new F1 record with the most wins at a single circuit (9), beating Michael Schumacher’s eight in France and Hungary.

As he and his race engineer, Peter Bonnington, dubbed “Bono,” celebrated the victory, Lewis Hamilton sent out an emotional message that went viral online. After the race, Bonnington screamed on the radio:

“These numbers guys. It means a lot, it means a lot to get this one. A big thank you to all the fans here. Love you guys.”

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff joined in on the celebration, sharing a heartfelt message with Hamilton. He said:

“We will prevail, we never give up, and what a sign off for our trajectory here at the British Grand Prix. We couldn’t have wished for anything better.”

This was Lewis Hamilton’s last British Grand Prix with Mercedes, as he is set to move to Ferrari in the 2025 season.

Lewis Hamilton couldn’t “stop crying” after his win at Silverstone

After winning the race today, the 39-year-old Hamilton was clearly overcome with emotion, as he expressed in his post-race interview. Jenson Button, his former teammate at McLaren, pointed out that he had seen the entirety of Hamilton’s career, but had never seen him in such an overwhelmed state.

Lewis Hamilton said that he wasn’t able to stop crying. He also mentioned that this was his first win since 2021 and his last race on the legendary track with Mercedes.

“Yeah, can’t stop crying,” Hamilton said.

“I think you know it’s been since 2021, I just- every day getting up, trying to fight to, train to put my mind to the task and work as hard as I can with this amazing team. This is my last race here the British Grand Prix so I wanted to win this so much for them because I love them, I appreciate them, all the hard work they’ve been putting in all of these years. I’m forever grateful to everyone on this team, everyone at Mercedes, and all of our partners,” he added.

This is Mercedes’ second win of the season, after George Russell’s victory in Austria last week. The Brackley-based team was well out of the top five at the start of the season, but they have shown significant improvement in terms of pace.
