After Justin and Hailey Bieber announced their pregnancy news earlier this week, many began wondering how the famous couple were able to keep the exciting news a secret.

On Thursday, May 9, the Biebers announced they are welcoming a little one into their family, posting a video to their Instagrams from their vow renewal in Hawaii. While they were excited to share the news that they are expecting, a source tells PEOPLE that the couple wanted to keep the news private for as long as possible.

“When they found out that Hailey was pregnant, it was just the best day for them. They have both been very emotional about it,” the source says. “They feel so blessed. They’ve also felt very protective of the baby from the moment they found out.”

“They shared with family and close friends early on. It was important for them to keep it quiet and just enjoy for as long as possible before they publicly confirmed though,” the source continues. “They asked their friends to not share until they were ready to announce.”

While Hailey missed Monday’s Met Gala, she attended Coachella 2024 with her husband, opting for comfy looks.

The Biebers made low-key appearances in the crowd on April 12 and April 13, dressed down to enjoy the Indio, California, festival.

As she enjoyed Ice Spice’s set, Hailey chose a no-pants “comfort” look, wearing a baggy leather jacket that covered her stomach, a black undershirt, white socks with black boots and neon green glow-in-the-dark nails. When she was spotted at Lana Del Rey’s headlining set, the model wore a black zip-up hoodie with a black hair wrap and tortoiseshell-patterned glasses.

Although the two had been subject to speculation of discord in their marriage, a source told PEOPLE that the rumors weren’t true.

“There’s no divorce and no truth to that whatsoever,” the insider said in early April. “They are very, very happy,” adding that the couple was “doing really well.”

Hailey herself commented on the gossip, sharing a blunt post to her Instagram Stories.

“Just FYI the stories and constant ‘blind items’ I see on TikTok are 100% of the time wrong Made out of thin air… Come from the land of delusion…So I know it may be fun feeding into these stories but just know they’re always false xx sorry to spoil it.”
