Corrections Log

How to report an error, and where we record the ones we fix.

Getting things right is the whole job. When we get something wrong, we fix it quickly, tell you what changed and keep a public record here.

How to report an error

Email [email protected]. To help us act quickly, include:

  • The title of the story, or a description of where you saw it.
  • The specific statement you believe is wrong.
  • What you think is correct, and a source if you have one.

We read every report. Our aim is to review reports promptly, though we cannot promise a fixed response time.

Our correction levels

Clarification

Used when a statement is accurate but could mislead or confuse. We add the missing context and note the change at the foot of the story.

Correction

Used when a fact, figure, name or attribution is wrong. We fix the text, add a visible note explaining what was changed, and record the entry on this page.

Retraction

Used rarely, when a story's central claim cannot be supported. We label the story as retracted, explain why, and keep it available so readers can see what was said and what happened.

Current status

No corrections have been logged since launch. We are saying this plainly because an empty log is not a promise that we never err. It simply reflects where we are. As soon as we make a correction, it will appear below.

Format of future entries

Each entry will follow a consistent format so it is easy to scan:

  1. Date: when the correction was made.
  2. Story: the title of the affected piece.
  3. Level: clarification, correction or retraction.
  4. What was wrong: the original statement.
  5. What is correct: the corrected statement and a short explanation.

Our Fact-Check Standard explains how we verify claims in the first place, and our Editorial Standards set out the wider principles. For anything else, write to [email protected].

Our commitments

We correct errors promptly and prominently, in the same place the error appeared whenever possible. We do not quietly rewrite stories to hide a mistake, and we do not delete a story to avoid a correction. If the error was serious, we will also say how it happened and what we are changing so that it does not happen again.

We treat people who report errors as partners, not as adversaries. If you disagree with a decision, tell us, and an editor who was not involved in the original story will take a second look.

What is not an error

Disagreement with an analysis, a headline you dislike or a viewpoint you do not share is not by itself an error, although we welcome feedback on all three. For those, please use [email protected] or see our Community Talk page for how to write a letter to the editor.
