Editorial Standards

The principles that guide what we publish and how we publish it.

This charter sets out the principles behind NewsToday123. It is a statement of what readers can expect from us, and a standard we can be held to.

Independence

Our editors decide what we cover and how we cover it. Advertisers, sponsors, sources and supporters do not review stories before publication and cannot buy coverage. If we ever cannot meet that standard on a particular story, we will say so on the page.

Human-edited

Every story is written and edited by people. An editor reads each piece before it goes live, checking the facts, the framing and the tone. Nothing is published straight from a tool or a feed.

Constructive, not naive

We believe that useful journalism shows what is going wrong and also what is being tried in response. We do not turn every story into good news, and we do not leave out inconvenient facts. Each news or feature story includes an honest paragraph about limits: what is not yet known, what might go wrong, and what remains unproven.

Sourcing

  • We prefer primary sources, such as documents, data and the people directly involved.
  • We say where information comes from, and we label figures that are self-reported by the organizations behind a project.
  • Where a source asks not to be named, an editor must know who they are and why anonymity is justified.
  • We describe unnamed sources by their role, not by invented detail.

Use of AI tools

We may use AI-assisted tools for routine tasks such as summarizing transcripts, suggesting headlines or checking formatting. When a tool materially shapes a published piece, we disclose it. Humans are always responsible for what we publish: a tool cannot be listed as the author, and a tool's output is never treated as a source of fact.

Conflicts of interest

Staff members must tell their editor about any financial or personal connection to a subject they cover. Where a conflict exists, the reporter steps aside or the connection is disclosed to readers. We do not accept gifts that could influence coverage.

Any sponsored material is clearly labelled as sponsored, placed apart from news coverage, and written or reviewed under separate arrangements from the newsroom. Sponsored content never appears in a 1-2-3 Digest in a way that could be mistaken for editorial judgment. Details of how we are funded are on our Ownership and Funding page.

We explain these subjects, but we do not give medical, legal, investment or personal-finance advice. Readers with personal decisions to make should consult a qualified professional.
